In 2015, while acting as relieving Head Teacher of Technology and Applied Studies at Winmalee High School Trade Training Centre, Megan Renwick realigned their hospitality program to create an integrated practical learning environment. This resulted in the opening of @thecaffeinelab, a student-led school cafe.
A year after the program launched, numbers grew from 41 hospitality students to 149.
Local industry partners often attend @thecaffeinelab during service, which has resulted in many students being employed part-time or furthering their trade qualifications post school.
In 2017, Megan presented her training model at a best practice workshop at the Macquarie Park Hospitality Conference. She has since acted as a consultant on similar programs in Department of Education schools across NSW.
Thanks to Megan’s efforts, the @thecaffeinelab has become a valued part of Winmalee High School’s culture. It’s a place that celebrates community, quality food and a commitment to excellence.
