Patrick Gavaghan is the National Training Manager at the Australian Glass and Glazing Association. He developed skill sets for the new Australian Standard AS4666 for insulated glass units, identifying the need for higher skill levels in their manufacture and installation. Patrick led a review of the industry’s Certificate III in Glass and Glazing, which identified students were undertaking units of competency that were irrelevant to their qualification. The subsequent restructure of the requirements has resulted in the qualification being streamed, allowing students to choose one of three specialisation paths.

Patrick’s work resulted in the commencement of training subsidies for skills shortage areas, which reduced training costs by 90 per cent. Patrick also manages the Australian Glass Industry Mentor Initiative and is developing a Targeted Apprenticeship Program for the glass industry. These strategies have seen Australian Apprenticeship enrolments in the industry increase by 15 per cent, with cancellations decreasing by five per cent.
