Certificate III in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care
RTO: TAFE Queensland
Employer: Apunipima Cape York Health Council
Wanting to find a way to give back to her community, Shaniqua chose the health sector. While studying a Certificate III in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care and working at Apunipima Cape York Health Council, Shaniqua gained knowledge and skills in basic health care and screening processes and how to advocate for community members’ rights and needs.
Having lived in Napranum on Cape York for 20 years, heading to Cairns and Townsville for her studies was daunting, but she chose the health sector to better the outcomes and future of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
She’s excited that her workplace is supporting a social prescribing trial this year—a trial for appropriately trained pharmacists to provide community access to important medications and treatments usually only available with a prescription. Shaniqua is also proud to be a role model for her younger siblings and to receive positive feedback from clients and colleagues.
“No matter where you come from or who you are. You can achieve whatever you want, if you believe in yourself,” Shaniqua says.
