The School-based Traineeship program at Hedland Senior High School is the largest School-based Traineeship program offered to students in Western Australian government schools.

The program involves one school day a week of paid work experience, complemented with on and off the job training at registered training organisations. This model offers students the opportunity to build knowledge and gain real life skills and experiences, prior to entering the workforce.

The Hedland Senior High School, School-based Traineeship program has grown from its first year operating in 2017 and offering just one qualification, to now offering 12 qualifications to students in years 11 and 12 in areas such as maritime operations, rail infrastructure, early childhood studies, kitchen operations, sports and recreations, and allied health.

Hedland Senior High School is bridging the gap between education and training to support non-university bound students to complete qualification in industry. Each year, the school works collaboratively with RTOs and local employers to devise ways to continue to improve the program.
