Advanced Diploma of Building Design (Architectural)

RTO: Federation TAFE

Employer: Ballarat Toyota

Barbara’s lifelong dream was to study buildings. Fascinated with construction and design, she wanted to understand how and why buildings were constructed, leading her to enrol in the Advanced Diploma of Building Design (Architectural) at Federation TAFE.

During her studies she was employed in building maintenance and facilities services, which gave her the opportunity to explore different buildings, question designs, and how well they correspond with function. Barbara’s studies have elevated her self-confidence and problem-solving skills and given her the opportunity to collaborate and learn from talented people.

Throughout her training, Barbara took on many leadership roles, often advocating for and mentoring fellow students who needed help with organisation, time management and comprehension, which in turn helped reinforce her own knowledge. Barbara stepped up in her course when a trainer unexpectedly resigned, to help affected students complete their tasks.

Helping and mentoring others to achieve their best provides Barbara with great satisfaction.

In February 2023, Barbara was awarded the EJT Tippett Outstanding Achievement Award at the Federation TAFE Awards for Excellence. Barbara is moving ahead with confidence into a career in the building and construction industry. Her VET experience has also opened her eyes to a new dream—Barbara has begun studying a Certificate IV of Training and Assessment to pursue a career as a VET trainer.
