After years of volunteer youth work and youth residential work, Ashling knew that working with children and disadvantaged youth was something she wanted to pursue as a career. She was successful in gaining a place in Certificate III in Education Support at host employer John Paul II Catholic Primary School in Rokeby, a suburb of Hobart. The traineeship has changed Ashling’s life and her outlook; John Paul II Catholic Primary School is in a low socio-economic area with children who come from different walks of life. She finds every day rewarding as she works in a diverse environment - from day to day she could be supporting a student with disability, working with a group during a literacy lesson or helping a student who has become disengaged.
