Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician
Employer: GID Electrical Pty Ltd.
Van Sui Thawng and his family fled war-torn Myanmar in 2009 and took a long journey to Australia, after spending time at a Malaysian refugee camp. Despite his past, Van Sui views challenges as a normal part of life and an opportunity to grow.
Van Sui taught himself English to make sure he could find a pathway to a great education. After attending an information evening at Yarra Hills Secondary College, he decided to complete the Victorian Certificate of Education combined with electrical trade training. It was the perfect option to finish secondary school and become an electrician through the School-based Apprenticeship.
As a role model for other young people, Van Sui leads by example and has become a voice to be heard in his community. He says that regardless of where you have come from, your cultural or language barriers, or experiences of adversity, if you have passion and a dream you can change your life for the better.
