Certificate IV in Community Services

Lewis Brown is a proud Yorta Yorta, Dja Dja Wurrung and Gunditjmara man. He decided on a career in community services because he recognised there was an over-representation of the Indigenous community in the correctional system.

He enrolled in a Certificate IV in Community Services with E-Focus, which worked in partnership with the Victorian Aboriginal Community Service Association Limited (VACSAL). He chose this pathway because he knew VACSAL provided culturally appropriate training, and because its learning environment and training model was designed for Indigenous students.

Before starting the Certificate IV, Lewis was working as the Koori Connect Caseworker for the Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Agency. Studying community services gave him the skills to transition into his role as Koori Court Project Officer at Court Services Victoria.

Lewis credits his training with increasing his listening and advocacy skills.

He is passionately committed to assisting clients towards fair and justifiable sentencing.
