Ian Goudie overcame adversity at a young age. As a young man he found himself homeless and couch surfing. With little formal education, he went on to manage a gay night club in Canberra where he met many young men and women in need of help and community

His experience inspired him to enrol at Canberra Institute of Technology and undertake a range of diploma qualifications in youth studies, community work, community development, mental health and drug and alcohol studies. This led to him completing an Advanced Diploma of Community Services Management.

During these studies, Ian formed Diversity ACT Community Services, a community-based, non-profit organisation that exists to advance and support the aspirations, acceptance and human dignity of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) members of the

Canberra community. The organisation provides free and confidential counselling services, information resources and a recreational hub for all LGBTI people in Canberra.

Ian’s success saw him receive the Australian Government’s 2012 Innovation Award for Volunteering and the ACT Government’s 2013 Volunteer of the Year Award (in Community Services). Ian was also shortlisted for the 2013 Canberra Citizen of the Year.
