The population of the Eyre Peninsula is geographically isolated and, due to industry downturns, bushfires and drought, is experiencing erosion of its skill base and resilience. This National Regional Initiative project brought together a range of opinion leaders from in and around the region to work with the community to identify and advocate for appropriate solutions.
A Summit held in 2013 resulted in the recognition of a range of key themes, including the need to demonstrate viable career pathways in the agri-food sector and identification of skills needs and gaps. Subsequently, a range of programmes were designed and implemented to cover cross-industry skilling and address skills gaps. Projects to date have involved the promotion of career opportunities in the seafood industry, as well as skilling people in both seafood and agriculture, allowing year round employment. A range of workshops have been delivered to inform and empower local business owners.
